Bitterroot Books is a cooperative, author- and worker-owned publisher focusing on the unsung stories of rural America. Often dismissed as “flyover country,” rural landscapes are as varied as the communities that inhabit them. Our mission is to publish books that represent the diversity, heart, and deep connection to place that exists in our rural spaces. We believe that artistic expression and representation embolden the cultural connections of our nation, fostering conversation, community, and growth.
We publish broadly
across a portfolio of adult non-fiction genres.

Our mission is...
Diverse
There is a hunger for stories that have not yet been told, for books as diverse and unique as the audience ready to read them. From cookbooks to political theory to memoir, Bitterroot Books seeks to shine a light on underserved communities and bring their work to the larger audience it deserves.
Cooperative
In keeping with our mission, Bitterroot Books strives to create sustainable economies for our workers, authors, and their communities. The cooperative nature of the publisher ensures the authors share in the profits of the company as a whole, not just their individual books. Our hope is to help create a more equitable and fair publishing industry, one that benefits us all.
Radical
Traditional publishing is fundamentally broken. Corporate consolidation is at an all-time high and author incomes have fallen 75% since 2009. Bitterroot Books has thrown out the publishing playbook to act on what authors, bookstores, libraries, and readers want. We’re listening and ready to create change together.
